I'm fine with making female protgonists look physically capable and non-glamorous, but I'd like to see the character depictions expanded even further. How about one like Marie Dressler, Margaret Hamilton (the Wicked Witch), or Margaret Dumont from the Marx Brothers movies? On the male side, there could be Oliver Hardy, George Arliss, or Roscoe Arbuckle.

I think there's definitely space for character designs that lean towards those sorts of characters! I was thinking about how protagonists (and antagonists) in adventure games tend to get a lot more leeway to look goofy/stodgy/comical, especially in the old point-and-click adventure games.

Actually, both Oliver Hardy and Roscoe Arbuckle were quite athletic. Although they played goofy and comical, they could be presented as serioous protagonists. See also the boxer known as Butterbean.
